Berlin 25 years after the Fall of the Wall!

--Day by Day Itinerary—


 Thursday, October 23rd, 2014: Leave the USA with an overnight flight to Berlin (flight is not included in the price.) This is a wonderful opportunity for you to use your Miles and get an inexpensive plane ticket.



Day 1: Friday, October 24th :

Arrive at Berlin’s Tegel Airport and take a taxi to your hotel. (it will be a very easy 20 minute ride, costing about 18-20 Euros) Settle in at the comfortable Four Star BERLIN MARK HOTEL conveniently located in downtown (former) West Berlin, just one block off the world famous Kurfuerstendamm. After a short orientation walk at 4 p.m. and an informative Welcome Meeting at 5.30 p.m. you will enjoy a delicious Welcome Dinner at a local restaurant.

Day 2: Saturday, October 25th, 2014:

Theme of the Day: Europe’s Cultural Metropolis Up Close!

You will start the day with a fascinating in depth three hour long discovery of the city by private bus and on foot. Together with your guide, Architectural Historian Thomas Abbott, / (or Anette Isaacs, tbd) you will see an array of world famous sites, such as the Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag, Potsdamer Platz, (designed by German- American Architect Helmut Jahn), the Jewish Museum by Daniel Libeskind, Museum Island, Charlottenburg Castle, and many more!

Lunch will be at a secret and very exclusive location! Afterwards, enjoy your free afternoon by either visiting the nearby moving Holocaust Memorial (designed by Peter Eisenmann) or take a stroll on the famous Unter den Linden Boulevard!

Get ready for an incredible evening: you will attend Puccini’s masterwork TOSCA  at the Schillertheater, the temporary home of the STAATSOPER BERLIN! This world class performance will be conducted by non other than Daniel Barenboim!

Day 3: Sunday, October 26th :

Theme of the Day: Berlin: Center of Contemporary Art and Architecture


This morning, join architectural historian Thomas Abbott for a compelling presentation about Berlin’s development as one of the most important playgrounds for international architects! Chicago’s own Helmut Jahn and Italian born Renzo Piano, for example, are just two of the many architects that have shaped post-Wall Berlin’s silhouette. After Lunch at a local Restaurant Thomas Abbott invites you to see Berlin’s ultra modern look for yourself: with a walking tour of Potsdamer Platz, a “city within a city” that was built in the late 1990s right in the middle of Berlin where the Berlin Wall once ran!

Day 4: Monday, October 27th, 2014:

Theme of the Day: Dessau-- birthplace of Modern Architecture

Today you will delve down into not only German, but also international architectural history by visiting the city of Dessau, home of the BAUHAUS School of Architecture. Dessau, located 75 miles south-west of Berlin, was once home of artists and artisans, such as Walter Gropius, Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, and Mies van der Rohe. We will tour the Bauhaus University and the Master’s Houses that give us fascinating insights into the lives and thought and work processes of these exceptional artists and architects.

We will return to Berlin in early evening, giving you a chance to explore Berlin’s culinary scene for an independent dinner and an evening at leisure.

Day 5, Tuesday, October 28th, 2014:

Theme of the Day: Berlin’s Magnificent Museum Landscape

This morning you will be introduced to Berlin´s amazing art world! Our renowned Art Historian and A&M Tours Specialist Thomas Hoffmann will lead a guided visit of the fascinating Gemäldegalerie, also nicknamed “Berlin’s Louvre”.


This is a magnificent museum that houses works by such important artists such as Rembrandt, Vermeer, Caravaggio, Rubens and many more!
Lunch today will be at a special place: Potsdamer Platz- the exciting city within a city!
Continue your exploration of Berlin’s fabulous Museums this afternoon with a visit to the world famous Museum Island! Your study tour includes a three day pass that you can use on three consecutive days and that will give you free entry to all of the City’s major Museums! After Dinner, meet Anette Isaacs for a most interesting evening lecture (topic to be determined).

Day 6, Wednesday, October 29th 2014:

Theme of the Day: Berlin’s captivating history: the Rise and Fall of the Berlin Wall!


You have made the wonderful choice to be in Berlin at a most special time: The 25th anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall is just days away and the city is bustling with activities that commemorate and celebrate that seminal event of 1989! This morning, Anette Isaacs will take you back in time with one of her fascinating presentations regarding Germany’s dramatic history.

After Lunch you will get a first hand look at the Wall (or the remains thereof) with a guided tour of the Berlin Wall Memorial Center in the district of Mitte.

Afterwards, enjoy the rest of the day at your own leisure starting perhaps with a shopping extravaganza at the world famous Kaufhaus des Westens (KADEWE), the largest department store in continental Europe?! The food emporium on the 6th floor is to die for! Or head over to the former Eastern part of Berlin and visit the Gendarmenmarkt in the former French Quarter, sampling an incredibly delicious Croissant at the Galleries Lafayette! But be sure to explore the wonderful stores, cafes and restaurants in the French quarter and especially the flagship store of Berlin’s own Fassbender and Rausch, the city’s premier chocolate maker, a chocolate lover’s delight.

Day 7, Thursday, October 30th:

Theme of the Day: Frederick the Great and his Royal Artistic Vision: Excursion to Potsdam and Guided Visits of Sanssouci Palace and Cecilienhof Palace.


Today you will explore not only the lives but also the castles of the royal family that turned Berlin and Potsdam into cultural and political centers: the Hohenzollerns.
You will begin this day with a morning guided visit of
Sanssouci Palace, once summer residence of Frederick, the Great, a walk in the palatial gardens, and an overview of the

city of Potsdam.

You will take our lunch break in the enchanting Dutch quarter of Potsdam where you can choose between an array of wonderful little restaurants and coffeeshops.
Afterwards, our A&M Tours expert Tom Abbott will guide you through the most interesting
Cecilienhof Castle, where, in 1945, the Potsdam Conference took place. No exploration of Potsdam would be complete without a visit of this impressive Castle and a discussion of the conference that changed the course of German history.
You will return to Berlin in the early afternoon which will give you some time to relax and do some souvenir shopping before enjoying a wonderfully delicious Farewell Dinner at a posh local restaurant.

Day 8, Friday, October 31st:

After enjoying a hearty Breakfast at your hotel, take a taxi back to Tegel airport and
return home with many wonderful memories of your time in Bountiful Berlin, Potsdam, and Dessau !
