(Breakfast and Lunch are included)

Day 3: Friday, May 17th, 2019:

Theme of the Day: The divided Berlin – Going back in History!
Although this 30th anniversary year of the Fall of the Berlin Wall is first and foremost full of joy and happiness for the German people we should not forget that East Germany was essentially a dictatorship that also displayed brutality and oppression. After a morning lecture by Anette Isaacs about “Life behind the iron Curtain” we will go off the beaten path and visit the little known district of Hohenschoenhausen. There we will have a guided tour of the former STASI (East German Secret Police) prison, which will be a chilling reminder of the fate of thousands of East German citizens who fell victim to the political persecution in the former GDR. (German Democratic Republic).
After the tour we will return to downtown Berlin to give you some more time to explore the area around your hotel or some other desired destination. But don’t go too far because we have a fabulous evening activity planned:
Tonight we are going to have the chance to discover the beauty of Berlin from the water! We will take a boat and travel on the river Spree which will give us a wonderful opportunity to see Berlin’s downtown and power center in the evening glow. Following the tour a culinary specialty awaits us: Can you say: Spargel mit Hollaendischer Sauce? You are visiting the city at the right time because May is white asparagus time in Berlin! We will indulge in a generous portion of the wonderful vegetable with the delectable sauce hollandaise in a local restaurant near the famed Friedrichstrasse.
(Breakfast and Dinner are included)

Day 4: Saturday, May 18th, 2019:

Theme of the Day: Frederick the Great and his Royal Artistic Vision: Excursion to Potsdam and Guided Visits of Sanssouci Palace and Cecilienhof Palace.
Today we will explore not only the lives but also the castles of the royal family that turned Berlin and Potsdam into cultural and political centers: the Hohenzollerns.
We will begin this day with a morning guided visit of Sanssouci Palace, once summer residence of Frederick, the Great, a walk in the palatial gardens, and an overview of the city of Potsdam.
We will take a break in the enchanting Dutch quarter of Potsdam where we will have Lunch at the aptly named Flying Dutchman Restaurant.
Afterwards, our A&M Tours expert will guide you through the most interesting Cecilienhof Castle, where, in 1945, the Potsdam Conference took place. No exploration of Potsdam would be complete without a visit of this impressive Castle and a discussion of the conference that changed the course of German history.
After returning to Berlin by late afternoon, take some time to relax and explore the city and its exciting cultural life on your own – evening at leisure.
(Breakfast and Lunch are included)

Day 6, Monday, May 20th , 2019:

Theme of the Day: Jewish Life and Remembrance in Berlin

It is hard to believe but the Jewish Community in Germany is the fasted growing Jewish Community in all of Europe. In a morning lecture your A&M Tours hostess Anette Isaacs will enlighten you about Jewish Life and Remembrance in Germany. The knowledge you will gain here will be a great foundation stone for our fascinating evening. But first enjoy your afternoon at your own leisure, starting perhaps with a shopping extravaganza at the world famous Kaufhaus des Westens (KADEWE), the largest department store in continental Europe?! The food emporium on the 6th floor is to die for! Or head over to the former Eastern part of Berlin and visit the Gendarmenmarkt in the former French Quarter, sampling an incredibly delicious Croissant at the Galleries Lafayette! Take some time to also explore the wonderful stores, cafes, and restaurants in the French quarter and especially the flagship store of Berlin’s own Fassbender and Rausch, the city’s premier chocolate maker-- a chocolate lover’s delight!
Be sure to be back at your Mark Hotel on time for our evening excursion to Daniel Libeskind’s architectural Masterpiece, the Jewish Museum in the district of Kreuzberg. Through a guided tour we will learn about the tremendous cultural contributions Jews in Germans have been making over many centuries. This is a not to be missed museum!
(Breakfast and Lunch are included)

Day 7, Tuesday, May 21st, 2019:

Theme of the Day: Operation Freedom: the 70th Anniversary of the Berlin Airlift!
It was perhaps one of the greatest adventures in American military history: the Berlin Airlift which ended exactly 70 years ago this May! When Soviet troops closed all access routes to West- Berlin by land, sea, and rail, thus threatening the lives of 2,5 million people and provoking the first major international crisis of the Cold War, American General Lucius D. Clay did not hesitate and proceeded to build a bold and fantastic bridge across the sky, involving 700 planes and 250 000 flights over a period of 14 months! Join Anette Isaacs for a special field trip to the former American Zone and visit the small but mighty Berlin Airlift Museum in the district of Zehlendorf! And who knows, maybe we can even climb into a real “Rosinenbomber” airplane?!
Enjoy your last afternoon in this amazing city by exploring even more museums or by doing some much needed souvenir shopping. Around 6 p.m. you will meet up again with your fellow travelers for a delectable and posh Farewell Dinner at a local restaurant, giving us plenty of opportunity to revel in the experiences of this last week in fabulous Berlin!
